What You Can Expect

Two important things will take place in our initial counseling session. The first is an exchange of information. I will give you information about my background, how I work, the counseling process, office procedures, and so forth. You share with me what's going on in your life that has brought you to counseling and what you hope will change as a result of working with me.

The second, and maybe even more significant outcome, is the forming of the therapeutic relationship. My hope is that you will experience with me a sense of warmth, compassion, non-judgement, and a genuine interest in and respect for you. In therapeutic terms, this is called "unconditional positive regard", and I believe that it is the foundation for any successful counseling experience.

By the end of the first session, you will likely have a good sense of how comfortable you feel with me and whether I'm a good fit for you as your therapist. Additionally, we will have developed some concrete goals for therapy and an initial direction for the sessions to come.
